Within the United States

As a fully remote organization, GitLab Foundation recognizes that team members may elect to move residences from time to time. Team members considering a move should be aware of the following:

  1. Compensation Adjustments: Pay is based on the team member’s role and the market rate in the location where they reside and pay taxes. Therefore, a relocation may result in a compensation adjustment, which could increase or decrease compensation, depending on the new market. Team members considering a relocation may speak with the Director of Operations to learn more about potential compensation adjustments in advance.
  2. Required Notifications: Team members must inform their manager and the Director of Operations a minimum of one month before any relocation. This ensures team members:
    1. Have all the relevant information about how their compensation and benefits may be impacted
    2. Align on role and performance expectations, including attending meetings necessary to perform the role
    3. Update their address in the TriNet system
  3. Benefits Consistency: While the same benefits will be offered to all team members regardless of their location within the US, it's important to note that benefit carriers may vary by state. The Director of Operations can provide detailed information about benefits in potential states.

Temporary

In the case of temporary relocations (or “digital nomad” lifestyles), compensation and benefits will remain tied to the team member’s permanent residency. In these cases, team members must obtain approval from their manager.

  1. The team member should speak with their manager to ensure alignment on expectations, working hours, etc., and obtain written final approval.
  2. If approved, the team member should forward the approval email to the Director of Operations (and copy their manager), informing them of this temporary relocation and any details related to the arrangement.
  3. Team members will be responsible for additional costs related to business-related travel and
  4. Team members will be responsible for additional costs related to business-related travel on behalf of the Foundation. They must follow the travel policy around booking travel from/to a location other than their place of permanent residency.

Outside of the United States

Team members considering relocating outside the US must speak with their manager and the Director of Operations. The organization is not location-agnostic for international moves (and currently only hires within the U.S., Colombia, and Kenya). This should be addressed as soon as possible to ensure the organization can employ team members within the country and provide benefits while adhering to all laws and regulations. The President and CEO must approve all international relocations.

  1. Compensation and Benefits Impacts: Compensation and benefits may differ significantly from those provided to US-based team members as each country has various laws and regulations around employment.
